A marlin tail-walking
On a 10-day trip on the Royal Star, we ran into some hungry schools of striped marlin down on the Potato Bank. We hooked, fought, and released them all day -- I went through 9 or 10 of them myself. I also spent some time trying to get good pictures of hooked fish jumping. Here are my best two shots.

Here’s one of my brother’s marlin from that day, just before release. The fish looked to be right around 100 lbs in weight.

We were looking for tuna and dorado near kelp paddies, and suddenly four of us were hooked up with marlin on light tackle.

The other fish broke off, but my line held. The boat had to follow the fish half a mile. It was gut-hooked, which weakened it considerably (which is probably one reason I was able to get it to the boat), so we decided to put it on board.

I was using a sardine on a 2/0 hook and 20 pound line with no leader. My outfit is leaning on the rail behind me.
